A little update

Before diving into more informative posts, I wanted to give an update of where I stand at the moment, as I created this blog a few months before publishing it, and a bit has changed. This blog to me is to raise awareness, but also for me to expand my understanding on environmental issues and move towards a more sustainable life. Therefore, I will be doing updates every once in a while to see if I have made any changes or had any setbacks.

Right now I have actually gone vegan. A few weeks ago I just realised that I had been talking about it a lot and doing one day a week where I was vegan, and I had gotten to a point where I was not too happy with the way I was eating. I honestly just felt this urge to go for it, and so I did.

I did not put any pressure on myself, I told myself that I am trying it out, and if I make any mistakes, that is okay. It’s been a few weeks and I am still vegan, and I am really enjoying it. I have made mistakes, and have been quite lenient when a product ‘may contain milk’, but overall, I am happy. However, I am going back home soon, and will be travelling quite a bit so I am worried of making more mistakes.

This is because when staying with others I find it hard to be vegan as I don’t want to impose any problems on anyone. I don’t mind buying my own milk alternatives, but when it comes to meals, although I can cook them myself, I am worried that it may come across as rude to not eat the food prepared for me. I know this is just a barrier I have to face, and I will try to tackle this over summer.

I am also aware that I am travelling and this is what makes up most of my carbon footprint, so I have actually cancelled a trip as I thought it was too short to take a flight for. However, other trips were booked way in advance, before I even started the blog, which is not an excuse, but simply myself not having been as concerned before about my air miles.

Overall, I still am unsure If I will stay vegan this summer, I feel as though I will, but I am not putting any pressure. If I make mistakes this summer, and go back to vegetarian for a bit, that is okay. However, I don’t want travelling to other places or people’s homes to become an excuse for me not to become vegan.

On that note, I do not think I need a label, I know why I want to become vegan, I do believe that it is the lifestyle that makes me feel best, but staying stuck on the word vegan, is what will make any mistake seem terrible and not simply part of learning.

It’s the same with the blog, I named it going from 2.8 to 1 because that overall signifies what I am trying to do by living this lifestyle. However, I am not going to get stuck on this number and keep calculating the number of earths I am on. I might be on less than 2.8 from going vegan and bulk buying a lot more, but I am about to go back home and then travel a bit this summer. I recently was calculating my numbers and worrying that I might go over or stay the same, and thought that my blog was not appropriate anymore. However, with this goal of mine, comes mistakes, and that is how I am going to get to where I want to be. I am not simply trying to go vegan, I am trying to do good by the planet. This means changing where I get my food, my clothing, where I travel to, what I eat, etc.

So, with all of this, what I am trying to say is, to any of you trying to become vegan or trying to help the environment, it is okay to make mistakes and it is okay to take your time. While I was vegetarian I used to have the occasional char sui bao at the local dim sum. Basically, if you want to make a change, do not make excuses, go for it, but take your time in getting there. As long as you know why you are doing it, and have a goal in mind, you will get there.

I want to finish off this post by stating that I understand that being able to live this lifestyle is a privilege. I am grateful that I am able to buy zero waste products and bulk buy, and that does not go unnoticed for me.

I hope you liked this post, if you prefer more informative posts, the next ones will be like that. The next posts will be about travelling low waste, vegan recipes and what zero waste is and how we rely too much on recycling!!

Thank you so much for reading!
